As regular vacationers and hikers in National Parks across America they've witnessed first-hand the damage caused by inadequate budgets on top of record visitation year after year.

And as members of the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) and the Sierra Club, Mike and Joe were educated about how serious the threats to the parks were. Back then they were talking about a $4-$5 billion backlog of repairs, maintenance and preservation work going undone, and nobody in Washington had a clue what to do. They still don't. When the budget crisis of 1995 shut down the entire National Park system their resolve became action and they formed a partnership.
